BLURT

FREE JAZZ SAX MEETS ART-ROCK MEETS PUNK (LONDON / UK)

Blurt goes way back to 1980 and was kind of England's answer to New York's No-Wave. The band survived more than 20 years of touring and almost as many records. After all this time, Blurt remains the same wild and unpredictable live act.  "This is the most extreme, danceable music this side of the good Captain (Beefheart), this side of ESG, of the past three decades" (Plan B). www.myspace.com/tedmiltonblurt /  www.tedmilton.com

BUSH TETRAS

POST-PUNK GIRLS ACTION (NEW YORK / US / ROIR) – EUROPE MINITOUR OCTOBER 2008

"Post new wave funk/punk early '80s stars of the New York club scene, the Bush Tetras were one of the most popular and exciting groups of the era. If there's any one song the Bush Tetras are known for, it's 1980's "Too Many Creeps" -- the band's most representative song and also the catchiest, made by the kind of jagged rhythms, slicing guitars, and sniping vocals. Romeo Void guitarist Peter Woods matter-of-factly confessed to being inspired by the sound of Pat Place's guitar." - allmusic.com "...15 years later, this stuff still sounds like the future." THE CHAP

DADAIST KRAUT-POP (LONDON / UK / LO RECORDINGS) – EUROPE TOUR IN NOVEMBER

Dada-garage-disco band from London is back for a UK tour with several new songs and new dances. Imagine David Byrne shaking the hand of a soul diva : that's the power of The Chap. They exactly know to make you dance with a cello. Kids at gigs have said the Chap "really rock" and "are really out there" and "look like teachers". Recently, Beck and Bloc Party asked them for some remixes. All of them can't be wrong. Third album to be release spring 2008. www.myspace.com/thechap

CHEVEU

WERD-PUNK / SHITGAZE (PARIS / FRANCE / SS RECORDS)

Formed four years ago around a cheap Casio synth with oldschool prerecorded rhythms, Cheveuha•r È) can be affiliated to the emerging werd-punk/shitgaze scene with Times new Viking, Pink Reason, Tyvek and Psychedelic Horseshit. Their rocknroll, electro punk and psychedelic sound mixed with a tortured deep voice seduced audiences in US and Europe where they playes with bands such as Animal Collective, Awesome Colors, King Khan, Large Numbe and The Rebel. Byron Coley said about them in the Wire magazine ; "France's Cheveu have an excellent grasp on a very French post-punk dynamism, devolved in a lopsided way from progenitors such as Metal Urbain, Warum Joe and Berurier Noir. But whatever their model, these guys produce a superior guitar raunch with great memble mystery moves (...). The primitivism here is lush enough to make you fall over." FAUST

KRAUTROCK LEGENDS (HAMBURG / GERMANY) – AVAILABLE FOR FESTIVALS

The inventors of Krautrock and legendary german art-terrorists ; these radical gigs will be performed by founder members Zappi Diermaier and JH Peron, with guests. "Inventors of 'Kraut Rock', iconoclasts extraordinaire, Faust are key figures in 20th Century music. In the early 70's, along with Can and Kraftwerk, they re-invented pop music as a specifically European art-form. Virtually imprisoned by Polydor in their own studio for two years, they were able to revolutionize the whole process of musical production; they improvised with Industrial noise, generated bizarre hypnotic grooves, indulged in shockingly wilful studio-based collages, and dabbled with every conceivable musical genre, sometimes simultaneously! Every now and then they found time for a burst of satirical pop, or occasional waves of delicate ambience. Amongst those Faust have strongly influenced we must count Brian Eno, Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire, Test Department, Neubauten, My Bloody Valentine, Julian Cope and a host of Industrial and Techno bands" Chris Cutler. "There is no group more mythical than Faust" (Julian Cope)

GABLE

FRUITY PSYCHOBILLY (PARIS / FRANCE / LOAF RECORDINGS)

French pop heritage is littered with smooth and creamy icons: Gainsbourg, Keren Ann, Adamo and Francoise Hardy. Gable, however, are a completely different kettle de poisson. Wearing their influences on their sleeves: Moldy Peaches, Meat Puppets and early Sonic Youth, they stick a lovely big lump of absolutely bonkers, stinky musical cheese in the face of their suave ancestry. On their second album, "Seven Guitars with a Cloud of Milk", the subjects of the 18 songs are as diverse as group suicide, the state of urban music, self-realisation, cats and drunk foxes all clocking in just under fourty minutes, in the best DIY tradition of bands such as The Vaselines, Violent Femmes and Beat Happening. www.myspace.com/gableacute

CHRIS GARNEAU

SONGWRITING (BROOKLYN / USA / FARGO) – UK TOUR IN OCTOBER

Chris Garneau's voice lies somewhere between liquid and matter on the scale of all that is and ever was. He is certainly a rare bird. Delicate mix of Regina Spektor, Antony, and even Elliot Smith, Garneau utilizes 88 keys to craft his music, and pairing this with his voice and the occasional strings of a cello, Chris Garneau generates heart-wrenching, fragil melodies. Every note is perfectly in place, every string delicately caressed and each haunting lyric riddled with enough ambiguity to keep any intelligent listener addicted. Probably the most stunning artist that's come our way this year. www.myspace.com/chrisgarneau

GAY AGAINST YOU

CRAZY NOISE / POP / MIDICORE (GLASGOW / UK / ADADAAT)

Gay Against You is consisting of Joe Howe aka Germlin and Lachlann Rattray aka Yoko Oh No ! They are enthusiastic, messy and very, very friendly duo who inhabit the middle ground between Cyndi Lauper and The Locust. In the two years since they formed, they have toured extensively in the UK, performing with acts such as Lightning bolt, Help she can't swim, DJ Scotch Egg, Shitdisco amongst others. Phew!

"Gay Against You are part of a fine mentalist tradition that spans Atari Teenage Riot, Denim and Diamonds, Les Savy Fav, Devo and, er, Dweeb and are a breath of fresh air in the often po-faced pretentious Glasgow noise/improv scene." Diskant. "Two subterranean creatures dressed in primary school P.E. kits, complete with charcoal-stained eyes and badly-concealed erections, howl unintelligibly over spaz-core electronics." Fused Magazine. http://www.myspace.com/gayagainstyou

GRIMO

EXPLODED BLUES (CHARTRES / FRANCE)

A self-taught musician and multi-instrumentalist, Dominique Grimaud expresses himself on guitar, moog synths... or even 78rpm discs. He began in 1970 with cult band Camizole (happenings, impro...). In 1978, he created with Monique Alba Video Aventures (released by Chris Cutler on ReR), now viewed as a precursor to the sound of Stereolab. In the 90s, he played some far-out bles with Peach Cobbler, along Rick Brown and Sue Garner. Grimo, who worked with Pascal Comelade and Pierre Bastien, who is a closed friend of Colleen, is a discreet but major figure in French improvisation scene. (File under : John Fahey)

If you're asking where Gastr Del Sol got it's inspiration, put on This Heat and Deceit. MAHJONGG

SICK GROOVE (CHICAGO / USA / K RECORDS) – EUROPE TOUR OCTOBER-NOVEMBER

Post punk, afro-beat, sick groove, file under A Certain Ratio, Konono no1, Can...

"Chicago-based collective Mahjongg are one of those musical anomalies that will induce bursts of head-scratching and itchy feet simultaneously. Non-specific in terms of genre, Kontpab of Mahjongg feels like a collision of numerous musical aspersions from the last four decades, where abstract dance rhythms become dissolved in array of Can-like repetition, and free-form jazz rubs shoulders with atmospheric funk and math-driven lo-fi to create an alluring if occasionally confusing concoction of styles." MARVIN

POWER TRIO (MONTPELLIER / FRANCE)

Marvin are Emilie, Fred and Greg, a guitar-drums-keyboards three piece from Montpellier, France. Marvin like to have fun, and want you to have some too. Eschewing the pretence and po-facedness that so often seems to come as part of the territory of DIY music, Marvin make blistering, noisy and truly joyful pop. Pounding drums and walloping riffs are offset by quirky, catchy analogue synth melodies, the result being something akin to a heavier Devo, the poppiest moments of Lightning Bolt or the tight, proggy silliness of Oxes or Trans Am. Vocals come in the form of simple refrains, chants and yelps, which seem somehow like the appropriate response to the primitive energy and joy generated by three musicians bouncing playful melodies and rhythms off each other. Throw in a bit of The Boredoms a and Pere Ubu, and youÕll start to understand the fun youÕll have here. Put simply, this is part MUSIC FOR DANCING TO – and whatÕs wrong with that ?

YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS

POP GIANTS (CARDIFF / UK / DOMINO) – OPEN TO BEAUTIFUL OFFERS

Young Marble Giants were a Cardiff post-punk musical trio formed in 1978. Their style featured minimal, but unmistakable instrumentation provided by brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham, which supported the cool, plaintive voice of Alison Statton. Stuarts songs were always insistently simple seeming, and the YMG's classic work was centered around a weird mix of Phil's steel-hawser bass, Stuart's haunting, rhythmic organ lines and punchy rhythm guitar (played on a rare John Lennon style blonde Rickenbacker), with Alison's slightly flat, plaintive vocals tentatively hanging in the space above. Very early in their existence, a fourth member of the YMGs was the cousin of Phil and Stuart, Peter Joyce, an electronics whizz, who had made his own synthesiser from a kit. This was a small touch-sensitive keyboard with an attache case-like box of circuitry, with several knobs and dials. It made sounds a lot like Eno's synths in the early Roxy Music, and Kraftwerk employed similar 'low-tech/high-tech' electronics. The YMGs used the synthesised rhythm machines available at the time (thet late 1970's) since they had no drummer. They were also interested in (by todays standards primitive) state of the art effects devices such as ring modulators and reverb units, and the emphasis was always on simplicity. While signed to UK independent record label, Rough Trade the YMGs released two EPs,Final Day and Testcard, and one acclaimed and very influential album, Colossal Youth (a reference to the Early Greek 'Kouroi' marble statues, from which the YMGs took the inspiration for their name.) The band toured and played in the US, Japan and Europe, and played in San Francisco, Vancouver, New York, Berlin. Touring companions included the band Cabaret Voltaire. Musical influences included Eno, Kraftwerk, Neil Young, Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Can and others. The band were acquainted with Scritti Politti, the band of Cardiff native Green Gartside, and ended up signed to the same label, Rough Trade records. It was revealed in the 2003 book Journals that the band were, along with Scotland's The Vaselines, Kurt Cobain's favourite band. Courtney Love's band Hole covered the Young Marble Giants track "Credit In The Straight World". After a couple of splendid shows in UK and France in 2007, Young Marble Giants are back for a few rare shows around the world. www.myspace.com/youngmarblegiants

KRAUT ROCK DANCING DUO (PARIS / FRANCE / VERSATILE) – UK TOUR IN SEPTEMBER

Vintage Analogic Electro-Kraut  : Zombie Zombie is Etienne Jaumet, sax and a collector of vintage synthesisers and Neman,  drummer of Herman DŸne. A couple of lines on monophonic synths plus some mean krautrock drums is their game. Album to be release on Versatile (Joakim, I:Cube) early 2008. "Can meets Suicide meets  Cosmodrome meets LFO meets John Carpenter meets Sonic Boom. Scary" (Chronic'Art).  "I really enjoyed them! Fine example of how rock and dance can be tasteful, energetic without break down the walls distorted synths or guitars. Bravo !" (Nick Chacona), "'Driving This Road' could be a lost Can anthem ! 4,5/5" DJ Mag. www.myspace.com/therealzombiezombie
